Job Description

Reporting to the Territorial Archaeologist, the GIS Officer provides GIS products, services, expertise, and advice to departmental personnel and external clients in order to assist in the management, monitoring and protection of NWT heritage sites and places. The incumbent must be familiar with northern cultures, politics, and environments, and be able to demonstrate some knowledge of heritage resource management practices. The incumbent must have a solid understanding of the theory and methodology of mapping human cultural landscapes, and be able to work with three-dimensional and temporal data.

Job Qualifications

The incumbent should have strong project management skills, the ability to work under minimal supervision, demonstrated analytic, cognitive and creative problem solving skills, the ability to deal with complex data, and possess solid artistic/cartographic abilities. The incumbent will be an effective communicator, comfortable dealing with the public, industry, and government agencies, and in cross-cultural situations. The incumbent must have strong oral and written communication skills, including good listening skills, and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts and techniques to a non-technical audience. The incumbent must have good time management and organizational skills. The incumbent must be able to operate a GIS facility according to industry standards. This is typically obtained through an undergraduate degree in geography with an emphasis in spatial analysis techniques and human landscape theory and methods, or equivalents, and three (3) years of career experience using GIS applications. An equivalency would be a graduate degree in GIS technology with one year of experience. Equivalent combinations of education and/or experience will be considered.

Other Information

The salary starts at $36.62 per hour (approximately $71,409 per annum) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,450 per annum. A job offer may be contingent upon a satisfactory criminal record check.
