Job Description

Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, Natural Resources Canada (Canadian Forest Service), and Department of Natural Resources (Forest Service) are partnering to bring together relevant forest management and ecosystem research, with computer modeling to support ecosystem-based management within the Humber River Basin (HRB). The partnership is developing a suite of interacting models in an integrated risk analysis (IRA) framework to facilitate collaborative decision-making by enabling the assessment of landscape scenarios (produced by various processes, e.g., climate change, harvesting plans, natural succession) and trade-off analyses of social, economic and ecological forest values within the HRB. Geospatial data development, application & delivery activities underlay implementation of the IRA framework.

Reporting to the Project Manager of the Humber River Basin Project and working closely with researchers at the Canadian Forest Service and the provincial Forest Service, the Geospatial Data Management Specialist will use geographic information system technologies to: identify and gather geospatial data representing environmental, economic, and social conditions within the HRB; import geospatial data into a geodatabase; convert appropriate geospatial data to Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) standards; and produce metadata for all geospatial data.

Job Qualifications

Considerable experience (3-5 years) in geospatial data development and management analysis using ESRI ArcGIS software products and experience assembling and managing spatial databases; graduation with an acceptable undergraduate degree from a recognized university in a field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position (eg: Biology, Geography, Environmental Sciences, Forestry or other sciences related to the position) with acceptable specialization in geographic information systems (GIS); or any equivalent combination of experience and training. The candidate should have a strong knowledge of the principles of database management and geographic information systems; a strong knowledge of metadata and CGDI standards and formats; and have demonstrated the ability to communicate clearly, plan and organize assigned work schedules effectively, and work in a team environment.
