GIS Cartographer
Calgary Fire Department
Our firefighters provide a wide range of services to The City, to make us one of Canada's top emergency response departments in fire and injury prevention, while promoting community safety.
Reporting to the Supervisor, GIS Mapping and Analysis, this position facilitates the creation and
maintenance of a variety of digital mapping products which are used to support the Calgary Fire
Departments planning and operations processes such as station location planning, apparatus deployment, incident reporting, and routing and response.
Specific duties include:
• research, develop and produce superior custom cartographic products on a project by project basis;
• gather requirements and create maps/diagrams and obtain information to support day to day departmental requirements for various reports and projects as needed;
• maintain Fire GIS (Geographic Information System) data in various databases, including the city's enterprise SDE;
• research, develop, implement and maintain scripts to support the cartographic data output process;
• produce technical workflow documentation, create metadata, produce written reports and present project results;
• identify and research cartographic methods specific to Fire and pertaining to the GIS industry in general;
• establish and maintain relationships to ensure the coordination of GIS initiatives and business continuity;
• perform related administrative duties.
Job Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a diploma (2-3 years full-time study) in Applied GIS or Geomatics Engineering plus a minimum of three years experience in geomatics, GIS or cartography, including CAD and GIS. Intermediate proficiency in MicroStation, ArcGIS, and Microsoft Office is required. Experience utilizing SQL, FME, Modelbuilder and/or related ETL geoprocessing tools, and a firm grasp of
scripting languages is considered an asset. A firm understanding of GIS and mapping concepts such as cartographic design, database design and management, projections, and the Alberta Land Titles System is required. Must demonstrate strong technical skills, attention to detail, work management, problem solving, communication skills, and customer service.

Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications. Only education obtained from an accredited institution will be recognized as meeting the minimum qualifications. More than one position maybe filled from this competition.

Compensation: Pay Grade 9
$26.39 - 29.02 - 30.48 - 32.00 - 33.61 - 35.28 per hour
Hours of Work: This position works a standard 35 hour work week.
