Job Description
POSITION: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist
REPORTS TO: Project Manager, GIS
BRANCH: Fort St John, British Columbia
PURPOSE:
Utilizing Autodesk Map Guide 6.5 the Geographic Information Systems Specialist is responsible for developing specialized computer software routines, internet based GIS, and database and business applications to customize geographic information. The incumbent is also responsible for operating specialized computer hardware, software and equipment to model, analyze and display geospatial data according to stakeholder requirements.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Ensure IT hardware, software and Web server is setup and maintained. Perform data entry, editing, compilation and conversion activities as well as maintenance and cleanup operations to systems following pre-determined procedures. Integrate external software such as spreadsheets and statistical packages with GIS software.
Responsible for Web design and programming, custom application design, reproject of spatial data, and database design and management.
Develop, implement and maintain data standards, quality control procedures and guidelines for the conversion, attributing and displaying of data. Establish, document, and enforce GIS standards and procedures.
Provide a custodial role for data residing within the base system. Work with external organizations on data transfer and systems compatibility issues.
Maintain knowledge in the field of Geomatics and Information Technology by monitoring trade publications, professional associations and actively participating in professional organizations.
Perform other duties as required.
Job Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Geography or related field, with a specialization in GIS, or a combination of 5 years equivalent experience and education in a GIS related field
Working knowledge of computer operating systems such as MapGuide, ARC/INFO, ArcGIS, AutoCAD Map, FME, IIS, ASP, ASP.net, ColdFusion, MS Access and SQL.
Extended knowledge and understanding of coordinate systems, transformations, survey methodologies, provincial base mapping, land use and resource inventory data.
Use independent judgement to meet goals and objectives under tight deadlines and demanding workload.
