Job Description
GIS Technician – Summer 2008 Three Month Contract Position
TELUS’ National Application Solutions group is seeking a dynamic individual to expand our GIS Data Operations Team to continue to meet our internal and external obligations and respond to new opportunities. The successful candidate will be part of a team of GIS professionals charged with maintaining innovative GIS applications and related data sets for clients both internally and externally in the Government, Oil & Gas, Utilities, and Commercial Business industries.
The ideal candidate will be a team player, committed to providing excellent customer service, able to meet short deadlines, be creative, self-motivated and can work with a minimum supervision.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a three month contract (with possible extension), junior GIS technician position. If you are looking for a junior position or practicum placement for Summer 2008, and meet the educational requirements, we are pleased to accept your resume in application for this position.
Education and Experience Requirements
• Degree/Diploma in Geography/Geomatics or a related discipline
• Post-Degree Diploma or Applied Degree in Geographic Information Systems
• Previous experience using GIS, Mapping, and CAD software (Microstation, MapInfo, AutoDesk, ESRI, Intergraph Products)
Technical Requirements
• Promote, create, and maintain practice of standards and processes relating to the delivery and maintenance of data
• Document and maintain processes and metadata
• Training and experience using various GIS software packages (preference will be given to those individual with experience using Microstation and Intergraph products)
• Understanding of spatial and non-spatial databases
• Proficient use of various Windows and Microsoft Office products (Excel, Access, Word, etc.)
• Ability to respond quickly to customer inquiries or issues
Soft Skills/Non-Technical Requirements
• Good interpersonal skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong team player who is motivated and takes personal initiative in owning tasks and problems
• Demonstrated ability to analyse problems, determine alternatives, and make sound decisions
