Job Description
The Nature Conservancy of Canada, BC Region (NCC-BC) is seeking two (2) ambitious, energetic and organized individuals to work as part of a team as GIS Analysts to organize and integrate complex information from diverse disciplines in support of conservation planning and science.
The GIS Analysts contribute to the short and long-term goals of the BC Region and national Conservation Programs by applying their information management, GIS and cartographic skills in preparing datasets, data summaries, maps, planning documents, graphics and other technical materials for internal and external use, including for site planning, ecoregional planning, and fundraising efforts. In addition to assisting in acquisition, organization, maintenance of and access to spatial and digital datasets the GIS Analysts will analyze, synthesize, interpret, document and integrate ecological and land use data into planning projects. Other responsibilities include providing logistical and technical support for ecoregional and site conservation planning in the BC Region and representing NCC-BC at working groups, workshops, conferences, joint ventures, and technical teams.
The GIS Analysts will work under the supervision of the Manager, Conservation Information & GIS Services in the BC Region, and will work closely with other NCC-BC and national staff, and NCC partners.
DUTIES:
GIS and technical support for Conservation Science and Planning (60%)
• Compile, digitize, analyze, manage, interpret and display biological and related GIS data at multiple scales;
• Conduct spatial assessment for ecoregional, natural area and site conservation planning and stewardship;
• Ensure quality control of GIS and related database and spreadsheet files;
• Assist in maintaining security of database and GIS files;
• Document through recording metadata, existing and newly developed datasets;
GIS and technical support for other departments and sub-regions (30%)
• Support the translation and integration of GPS data collected at NCC projects into the corporate dataset;
• Assist in the compilation of relevant data and statistics for the review of prospective land protection projects;
• Generate multi-scale figures and GIS maps for project and development needs;
• Provide technical support for data management and GIS software/hardware; and
Other duties (10%)
• Work with NCC partners and staff to develop applications for GIS and biodiversity data;
• Other duties as assigned by the Manager, Conservation Information & GIS Services or Director of Conservation Science & Planning.
Job Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:• Degree or equivalent in Geography, conservation biology or related field;
• Advanced information-management and GIS technical training gained through a GIS diploma, degree or equivalent experience an asset;
• 2-4 years working experience with GIS, specifically with ESRI products (ArcMap 9.x) and database management; related, practical experience in conservation planning, landscape ecology, community planning, or equivalent multi-disciplinary field;
• Proficiency in MS Access, SQL, statistical analysis techniques and metadata creation and exposure to object orientated languages (Visual Basic, Python, Pearl) an asset;
• Familiarity with Marxan, GPS, KML and remotely sensed imagery an asset;
• Knowledge of resource inventory, biodiversity and element occurrence (EO) data, specifically BC Government datasets;
• Excellent verbal, written and graphic/cartographic communication skills;
• Ability to work under pressure, overcome challenges, prioritize work and manage several tasks with multiple deadlines
• Ability to work as a team member and independently (with attention to detail), seek assistance/input as required and to work on interdisciplinary teams;
• Excellent interpersonal skills, diplomatic, cheerful and dynamic; and
• Strong commitment to the goals of the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
