Job Description
Holland Barrs Planning Group (HB) is one of Canada’s leading sustainable development consulting and planning firms, with a wide range of projects for public and private sector clients. This growing boutique consulting firm focuses on innovation and practical solutions for action on sustainable development. HB is located on the edge of Gastown in Vancouver, in a renovated heritage building close to many transit routes and amenities, with additional branch offices on the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island.
HB seeks a highly motivated and talented GIS/CAD Technician who is will take a lead position in advising on, implementing and managing a GIS / CAD system. This role will support the firm’s work in community, neighbourhood and infrastructure planning. This new position will support a very busy team with a long list of municipal clients. The successful applicant will offer advice to the management team regarding appropriate workstation and software systems and will be responsible for implementation with vendors and technicians as required.
Ongoing, major responsibilities will include: manage and make available data on a range of technical information (inventories, setbacks, slope info., etc.); prepare a wide variety of plans, including preliminary design, orthophoto, cadastral and final plans from a wide variety of source material; work with client groups to access and deliver data; participate in the plan making process; modify GIS / CAD files received from others to meet digital storage requirements; coordinate and assist with the organization and maintenance of electronic and hard copy drawings and records as required; and, prepare plans and maps suitable for public review (i.e. open houses). The firm also intends to work closely with planning tools such CommunityViz or to develop custom programs that will inform land use planning strategies that reduce GHG emissions.
The ideal candidate will also be able to demonstrate a wide range of technical skills including desktop publishing and web design OR be willing to ‘train up’ to carry out these tasks as required. If skills are not established in these areas, the applicant must demonstrate they have the creative ability and interest to carry out these tasks. Job Qualifications
The successful applicant should have: a related technical diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution; a minimum of three years of experience in GIS, AutoCAD, Raster Design and drafting; working knowledge of CommunityViz (not required but preferred); an excellent command of the English language, both spoken and written; demonstrated good judgement and a strong orientation towards customer service; the ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
