Job Description
We are looking for energetic, self motivated individuals to meet the challenges of working as a Remote Sensing Technician in support of the Airborne Wildfire Intelligence System (AWIS). AWIS is an award-winning, unique, state-of-the-art remote sensing technology that delivers GIS integrated wildfire intelligence in near real-time. The primary goal of AWIS is to deliver service oriented, accurate, timely, and comprehensive wildfire intelligence to facilitate safe, effective, and efficient wildfire management. We frequently operate under demanding emergency response conditions and excel in our ability to repeatedly deliver consistent quality products.
These are part-time, seasonal, entry-level positions that will provide a guaranteed minimum number of hours each month. Your responsibility will be the operation of mission-critical data collection equipment onboard a small twin-engine aircraft. Working hours will be highly variable with frequent requirements for night shifts. AWIS is based in Edmonton and is operated primarily in Western Canada although the ability to travel to anywhere in North America for extended periods is required.
The employment terms being considered will be from March to September and May to August 2007 with a flexible start date and the possibility of extension.
Job Qualifications
Range and Bearing will provide all job specific training required.
Required:
1. Highly motivated and exceptionally flexible with an ability to work well both independently and with others.
2. Strong computing background and problem solving skills.
3. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
4. Enrollment in or a graduate of an accredited university or technical school or the equivalent experience in one or more of: Remote Sensing, Geography, GIS, Environmental Earth Sciences, Forestry, Information Technologies or a related discipline.
5. Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
6. Residence in or relocation, if necessary, to Edmonton.
7. Valid Canadian passport for duration of the term.
8. Willingness to undergo a security assessment.
Experience flying in small aircraft and/or a high tolerance to motion sickness as well as First Aid training will be considered assets.
Other Information
Wages will be compensatory with education and experience.
