Job Description

Program: The KNT First Nations are a group of 9 First Nations located on northern Vancouver Island and the adjacent Central Coast mainland. They are developing a regional office to manage provincial government resource development referrals within their territories (the “Clearinghouse Office”). Provincial government resource development referrals will be directed to the Clearinghouse Office where staff will, based upon existing First Nation land use planning, cultural and resource data, work with the participating First Nations in developing effective referral responses in a timely manner. Purpose of Position: The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician / Analyst will manage and conduct spatial and attribute data analysis for use in the Clearinghouse Office planning and decision making.

Job Qualifications

Selection Criteria: Education and Experience – • A technical school diploma in GIS with experience in the field of natural resource management • Experience working with First Nations is preferred Knowledge – • Working knowledge of Arc GIS and ESRI software • Working knowledge of mapping systems and processes such as BCGS, UTM, NTS, scale measurement, map compilation, reproduction methods, photo and satellite interpretation Skills and Abilities – • Ability to communicate effectively • Ability to use and maintain a broad variety of mapping and design hardware, software and other equipment to create themes, colour thematic maps, terrain models and develop reports • Ability to integrate data/information from a variety of sources to produce maps and other graphic materials • Ability to apply layout and design principles Competencies – • Flexibility – adapts to and implements new practices when original approach and assumptions are no longer valid, able to shift strategic focus and activities quickly in response to operational priorities • Results oriented - meets challenging goals, delivers and strives to improve performance • Teamwork & Cooperation – works as an individual and as part of a team, collaborates across internal and external organizational boundaries to meet common objectives, develops networks and builds alliances

Other Information

Nature of Work and Position Links: The GIS Technician / Analyst will • Work under a Project Manager who will oversee project goals; • Work with a number of staff assisting in developing referral responses with individual First Nations; and • Liaise with provincial government staff and applicants in receiving referrals, accessing information / spatial data.
