DUTIES: The primary assignment of the successful candidate will be to instruct students, facilitate learning, and evaluate student progress for students enrolled in the GIS Applications Specialist Post Diploma Program by planning, organizing, and managing learning activities and resources in both classroom and laboratory environments. The instructor will incorporate their own teaching style to existing lesson plans by preparing and implementing various instructional strategies, techniques, and learning models to achieve specified learning outcomes and meet course objectives; establish student performance objectives and evaluation methods and meet with students regularly to gauge and evaluate progress and identify and resolve problem areas in teaching and learning; communicate effectively at a level appropriate to the ability of students and support an emotionally safe learning environment that is conducive to learning by maintaining appropriate classroom discipline following College policies and procedures; and actively participate in and contribute to accreditation activities to ensure the program is of the highest standard  The teaching assignment may include any courses offered in the program relating to cartography, statistics, geostatistical spatial analysis, project planning and management and remote sensing. The successful candidate will also be responsible for providing instructional support to students working on major GIS projects, which are directly related to fulfilling specific learning objectives of the program.  
 

 

 

Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:  The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong working knowledge of GIS software applications with considerable experience working with the ESRI suite of GIS products.  Additional knowledge of conventional and contemporary spatial and aspatial statistical techniques and practical experience using current remote sensing software are all required.  Candidates must have experience using current versions of Geomatica and ArcGIS extensions for spatial analysis.  Experience applying cartographic design theory and map production techniques are also required; as well as knowledge of current teaching/learning methods, and classroom management. Well-developed communication, analytical, conflict resolution, and organizational skills are also required. The incumbent should also be able to work independently while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and showing a strong commitment to student success strategies and initiatives. The above skills would normally have been acquired through successful completion of a Bachelor of Applied Technology Geographic Information Systems Degree, a Bachelor Degree in Geographic Information Systems, or an undergraduate degree with a specialization/concentration in geospatial applications supplemented with an Advanced Diploma/Post Diploma in GIS, along with at least four years of recent, relevant work experience. A Bachelor of Education (Secondary/Post-Secondary) Degree, eligibility for membership in an appropriate professional association, and experience teaching at the post-secondary level would all be considered assets.

SALARY:  Commensurate with qualifications and experience in accordance with College of the North Atlantic Faculty Collective Agreement.
