Job Description

Position Type/ Hours:

This is a permanent full-time position working thirty-five (35) hours per week within the Application Services Branch of the Office of the Chief Financial Officer. This position is within the CUPE 1505 Bargaining Unit. This position is located in the community of Fort McMurray, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s urban centre.

 

Position Description:

Under general supervision, supports the work of the branch and effectively liaises with business units to advance GIS in the municipality. The successful candidate will utilize advance tools in GIS information management systems in order to perform cartographic, analytical, and administrative GIS work.

 

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Creates paper and electronic maps.
  • Models data for effective spatial database storage.
  • Extracts, transforms, and loads spatial and related non-spatial data.
  • Cleans and maintains data.
  • Maintains skills and knowledge to keep pace and currency with industry.
  • Comprehends in detail and works with the municipality’s spatial datasets.
  • Contributes ideas to improve branch performance.
  • Documents assumptions, methods, and processes.
  • Performs other duties as required.

 

Job Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • Degree in Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline with a concentration in Geographic Information Systems is required.
  • Two (2) years of experience using GIS software (credit is provided for experience gained during work terms depending on the depth and breadth of the experience) is required.
  • Work experience with the following is required:
    • Python Scripting or other scripting/programming languages.
    • Using and/or administering enterprise databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, etc.).
    • Working with cadastral layers.
    • Spatial analysis and design.
    • Cartographic design.

 

You will possess the following:

  • Excellent communication, inter-personal, and organizational skills.
  • Able to work independently and as part of an energetic team.
  • Must possess tact, patience, and diplomacy.
  • Ability to effectively make decisions that consider both strategic and operational consequences.
  • Experience using ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced (Includes ArcInfo, and the following extensions: Spatial Analyst, Spatial Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, Maplex)
  • Knowledge of spatial statistics and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and Access) with intermediate to advanced skills.
  • Knowledge of extract, transform, and load methods, global position system (GPS) data acquisition, Python scripting, and enterprise databases are assets.

Salary Range:

$47.45 (Start Rate)                               

$55.90 (Permanent Rate)

*Permanent rate effective after twelve (12) months of employment.
