Job Description

The Opportunity

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), a leader in Canadian habitat conservation, is seeking two Remote Sensing Analysts to support the classification of boreal wetland mapping projects, and secondly to provide limited GIS technical support (i.e. analytical, cartographic, and database management) specific to GIS/mapping projects.

The Remote Sensing Analysts will be responsible for undertaking the classification of various wetland mapping projects, working with a team of other Remote Sensing Analysts/Specialists, to support DUC’s vision and strategies.  As members of the Boreal Program team, you will provide remote sensing technical expertise and leadership to internal clients, and potentially collaborate with external partners to meet DUC’s mission and implement mapping project components. 

Position responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the classification of boreal wetland mapping initiatives in accordance to internal protocols and standards.
  • Support image processing tasks, archiving and distribution of remotely sensed data.
  • Assist in helicopter or fixed wing field data collection and assist in managing field logistics.
  • Support data requests, solicitation of data, and all data use/licensing agreements.
  • Help support, design and implement research related to the development of wetland classification/inventory.
  • Compile project reports, metadata and proposals as required.
  • Identify, gather, analyze, and integrate spatial data/imagery from internal or external sources (e.g. USGS, Sentinel Hub, etc.).
  • Create maps and graphs for presentations, technical papers, or reports.
  • Support the compilation of wetland inventory project
    metadata and other documentation.
  • Participate in project teams providing GIS support, spatial analysis, modeling and decision support.
  • Write programs and scripts (e.g. Python, R) as required.

Job Qualifications

Requirements

  • University degree in GIS, Remote Sensing, Geography, or a related environmental science.
  • Minimum 1-3 years’ work experience using GIS/Image Analysis software.
  • Solid understanding and experience working with ESRi ArcGIS and associated extensions.
  • Solid understanding and experience working with image processing software (e.g. PCI, ERDAS, ENVI, etc.).
  • Understanding/ working experience with object based image analysis (OBIA) software (eCognition Developer) is a highly desirable asset.
  • Solid understanding and experience working with Microsoft suite (Excel, Access, Word).
  • Landscape ecology background or prior experience with wetland ecosystems.
  • Experience working with various satellite imagery/datasets, (e.g. Landsat TM/OLI, Sentinel 1/2, SPOT, etc.).
  • Experience performing image interpretation (e.g. with Google Earth, aerial imagery, etc.).
  • Understanding of remote sensing concepts and products, such as data types (e.g. multispectral, SAR, LiDAR, etc.) and processing steps (e.g. atmospheric correction, orthorectification, etc.).
  • Excellent cartographic skills in developing various communication delivery products.
  • Proven knowledge of geographic (geo-processing) and cartographic principles (projections and datums).
  • Ability to work independently, and also within a team.
  • Efficient learner, with strong ability to follow workflow instructions.
  • Strong time management skills, with the ability to set priorities and meet rigid deadlines.
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license is required.

 

These positions will be based from our dog-friendly office in Edmonton, AB, with a preferred start date of mid-to-late October, 2016.
