Job Description

The Shell Canada Ltd. Geodesist position is the Principle Geodesist for Canada, reporting to the Team Lead in Houston, Texas, coordinating Geodetic Services across our Upstream Americas (UA) portfolio, and liaising with the Global Principle Technical Expert (PTE).
 
The successful applicant will provide high value geodetic advice and services to projects and customers to all parts of The Americas region, for Exploration and Development asset teams, geophysical teams, Technical Data Management and Seismic Data Management with respect to geo-reference integrity of spatial data in corporate databases. 
 
A Day in the life of a Shell Canada Geodesist:

  • Be a knowledge expert for geodesy and authority for the discipline control 'Geodetic Reference Definition', ensuring the correct Coordinate Reference Systems and transformation processes are in use on Upstream America (UA) projects and in geoscience applications, workflows and databases. It will also include key technical input and guidance to relevant external organizations to ensure geodetic standards are maintained and adequately represented across the E&P industry in The Americas. Being able to combine geodetic skills with components of the Geo-Information Management consultancy role is essential.
  • Design and deploy coordinate Quality Control services for key activities such as well coordinate and well deviation QC, bin grid validation, and Coordinate Reference System configuration and setup for E&P software.
  • Design, implement and apply geodetic Quality Control and Quality Assurance on E&P software.
  • Work closely with data management and subsurface technical IT colleagues to ensure workflows (seismic, wells, Petrel, Land holding systems, etc.) address necessary geodetic Quality Control and Quality Assurance requirements.
  • Provide expert geodetic advice to operations in new areas of The Americas, and countries in those areas of The Americas with international border disputes.
  • Ensure close and aligned cooperation between distributed Geomatics teams in the UA organization. Includes, but not limited to, Well Engineering, Seismic processing, Technical Data Management, the Assets and Subsurface technical IT colleagues to ensure workflows (seismic, wells, Petrel, Land holding systems, etc.) address necessary geodetic QC and QA requirements.
  • Mentor and coach first assignees and less-experienced staff to develop their knowledge of, and capabilities in Geodesy as part of their New Technical Professional (NTP) assignments.
  • Raise geodetic awareness in the UA organization by coaching less experienced Geomatics staff and customers and also work to develop and deploy geodetic training across UA.
  • Hold an important role in global Geomatics projects and relevant global working groups.
  • Define, improve and monitor geodetic processes as part of the activities in Geomatics.
  • Provide expert advice to Geomatics colleagues (e.g. operations, remote sensing), partners and customers in all geodetic subject areas (e.g. datums, projections, transformations, Geodetic networks).
  • Support the maintenance and development of the geodetic software suite in Shell. Ensure links are made to this from other software initiatives.
  • Lead technical assurance in Geodesy for UA companies via owning and improving standards and alignment of workflows.

Job Qualifications

We are looking for someone with the following Skills and Experiences:

  • A Geomatics or related degree (B.Sc) from a recognized university. 
  • Masters or PhD in Geodesy or related subject is STRONGLY desired. 
  • 8 to 15 years’ experience in Geomatics, preferably in Oil and Gas.
  • P.Eng or P.Geo designation from APEGA or eligibility to apply may be required.
  • Familiar with main E&P subsurface tools, in particular their handling of geodetic matters.
  • Experiences professional experience in all areas of Geodesy competencies.
  • Have good understanding of exploration, development and engineering work across the E&P lifecycle, preferably in The Americas region.
  • Ability to listen to understand customer problems and identify opportunities to fit Geomatics services to address these problems.
  • Demonstrate a pro-active attitude to problem solving and has excellent communication capabilities.
  • Hold a deep understanding of critical elements of the discipline's Geodetic specialty.
  • Good understanding of emerging technical developments, best practices and technologies.
  • Good perspective on the links and interaction required with other Disciplines in E&P.
  • Capacity to handle several task at once and prioritize accordingly.
  • Driven to deliver fit-for-purpose technical solutions.
