Job Description
EPCOR Water Services has an excellent opportunity for a Technologist, GIS Applications to join the Water D&T team and work on the development and upgrade of various GIS applications.
One permanent full time position available.
Reporting to the Manager, GIS, the Technologist, GIS Applications is accountable for:
- Responding to circulars in a timely manner by checking water information so that no conflict occurs with other utilities (i.e. Power, ATCO, Drainage, TELUS, etc.).
- Providing input into GIS plans and directions, and ensuring on-going appropriate relationships with other positions.
- Training in order to fill resource gaps as well as for succession planning.
- Providing GIS support services, including:
- Maintaining documentation and metadata on the physical data model
- Data modeling, conversion, extraction, manipulation and analysis
- Cartographic mapping
- Supporting the GIS Manager in the design and documentation of processes that efficiently extract GIS related data.
- Analyzing and preparing summaries to support effective decision making.
- Acting as a resource to Drafting Technologist and IT Systems Analyst staff in resolving software or data processing issues.
- Participating in the systematic review of GIS related applications that are eligible for upgrades.
- Actively participating in GIS related projects and implementation, while being aware of the decisions being made and the impact they have on the business, end users and the GIS applications.
- Under the guidance of the GIS Manager, creating business process flow charts that support application development, training and decision making.
- Supporting the GIS Manager in the design, development and delivery of GIS related training.
- Supporting the GIS Manager in the maintenance of all MapInfo data layers that are sourced externally and internally.
- Providing technical writing support for training manuals and procedure documentation.
- Familiarizing oneself with project management methodology and creating testing documentation for UAT.
- Supporting drafting technologists with recording and construction drawings.
Job Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering Drafting and Design Technology or Geographic Information System.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of related experience in GIS applications, of which includes at least 2 years of experience in a distributed utility.
- Demonstrated experience in the following:
- Drafting and computer-aided drafting (i.e. AutoCAD or MicroStation)
- Creating and executing SQL statements
- Creating scripts that can automate tasks or extract data on demand
- Preparing and delivering training
- Requirements documentation and technical writing
- Proficient in MS Office, MicroStation and MapInfo.
- Database query and analysis knowledge.
- GIS desktop analysis knowledge.
The ideal candidate for this position must possess sharp attention to detail and the ability to listen keenly and extract succinct points during team discussions. Additional behavioural skills required of this position include the use of problem solving and analytical thinking, as well as contributing in meaningful ways within a team environment.
