Job Description
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), the leader in wetland conservation, is seeking a GIS Specialist to provide technical support skills including programming, data management, and advanced analysis, to assist in the deployment of various GIS projects. The GIS Specialist will be responsible for managing GIS project components, participating in partnership activities, and providing the advanced technical and analytical services required to support DUC's vision and goals. The position, located in Edmonton, Alberta, will report to the Regional GIS Manager commencing on the preferred start date of July 1st, 2012.
As a member of the Western Boreal Program (WBP) team you will provide GIS technical expertise and leadership to internal clients while collaborating with external partners to meet DUC’s mission and implement GIS project components. The candidate will also collaborate with other Regional and National GIS team members on projects requiring specific expertise. Your responsibilities will be primarily, but not limited to:
- Design and implement GIS projects and products in consultation with staff and partners to meet DUC’s and partner objectives
- Lead or participate in project teams providing GIS support, spatial analysis, modeling and decision support
- Maintain and update data to support the program.
- Identify, gather, analyze, and integrate spatial data from internal or external sources.
- Write programs and scripts (e.g. Python, R) as required.
- Perform statistical analyses, geo statistical analyses, 3-D modeling, and spatial modeling to support DUC science/conservation planning objectives.
- Create maps and graphs for presentations, technical papers, or reports.
- Compile metadata and other documentation.
- Assist in image processing tasks (e.g. classification, accuracy assessment), archiving and distribution of remotely sensed data
- Operate and maintain GIS system hardware, software, plotter, and other devices.
- Assist in helicopter or fixed wing field data collection.
Job Qualifications
You possess a technical diploma in GIS and/or a university degree in geography or related environmental science and have a minimum of five years’ work experience using ESRI GIS software (ArcGIS). You also possess the following:
- Solid understanding and experience working with ESRI ArcGIS (ver.10) and associated extensions.
- Proven knowledge of geographic (geo-processing) and cartographic principals (projections and datums)
- Advanced knowledge of GIS modeling approaches and procedures
- Excellent oral/written communication and presentation skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting
- Strong time management skills
- Ability to work on multiple projects, set priorities, and meet rigid deadlines
- A valid Canadian driver’s license is required
- Excellent cartographic skills in developing various communication delivery products.
- Strong data management skills.
- Landscape Ecology background or prior experience with wetland ecosystems are preferred.
- Experience with LiDAR.
- Demonstrated ability to listen and translate user needs into a series of GIS procedures used to generate products that meet those needs.
- Experience working and communicating with diverse groups of people in dynamic settings.
