The BC Coroners Service is responsible, under the Coroners Act, for conducting thorough, independent investigations of all factors contributing to the unexpected, unattended or unexplained deaths of people in B.C. The Identification & Disaster Response Unit (IDRU) is responsible for the identification of human remains and management of disaster response planning in British Columbia.
As Spatial Information Analyst, you will provide fundamental investigations and analysis for the IDRU. Working with highly confidential information, you will exercise high levels of tact and discretion to maintain a geographic information model and conduct spatial and forensic data analyses on human remains. As an expert, you will contribute to the development of Geographic Information System (GIS) policies and train staff to ensure the effective and efficient use of GIS resources. Skilled in communications, you will prepare in-depth reports and present briefing materials for internal and stakeholder review. Job Qualifications
You are equipped with one of the following:
- a bachelor’s degree in natural resource management, geography, sciences, anthropology or archaeology, along with a GIS diploma and two years’ related experience, or
- a GIS diploma combined with a diploma in natural resource management, geography, science, anthropology, or archaeology and three years’ GIS-related experience, or
- Grade 12, with at least one year of GIS courses and at least five years’ GIS experience.
No matter what your educational background, you are well-versed in manipulating and integrating geographical and statistical data using ESRI geographic information systems, as well as other applications and relational database management systems, specifically Oracle and MS Access. Demonstrated experience creating a variety of digital, geographical and descriptive products including themes, colour thematic maps, terrain models and associated descriptive statistics will also be expected, as will experience in data management, including metadata, archiving, conversion, scale and projections, etc.
